Race Report - Angerville

FIA Karting European Championship Round 1

18-21 April 2019

The opening round of the FIA Karting European Championship took place this weekend in Angerville, south-west of Paris with 90 entries from all over the world in the OK-Junior category competing for 34 places in Sunday’s final.

Lorenzo had to fight strongly after a not brilliant qualifying due to heavy traffic. In the heat he got a 22nd place after an accident at the first lap, an 8th, a 13th, a 22nd (13th plus 5” bumper).

Sunday could be the last chance to make it to the final, and in his final qualifying heat Lorenzo started from the 11th row of the grid and again there was chaos at the first corner. Seven drivers were eliminated immediately, but Lorenzo picked his way through and at the end of the first lap he came through comfortably in the top ten. As things settled down he was running in 7th behind Xi Zheng Huang but this group of seven were nose to tail battling for the lead.

As positions changed Lorenzo continued to make progress in 5th and was right on the tail of those fighting for a podium. He finished in an excellent 5th place, but unfortunately this result was not enough for a place in the final. For just five penalties he didn’t make it, finishing 40th overall.

Now we look forward to Genk, Belgium, for the second round of the okj European Championship.

We’ll report to you again soon, ciao ciao.
