FIA Karting European Championship Round 2
16 - 19 May 2019
Lorenzo was in Genk last weekend for the second round of the OKJ European Championship. As usual the level of competition across the field was very high with 78 entries.
The weather in Belgium is always unpredictable with sunshine and showers, so after being well prepared in dry conditions, at the last moment Lorenzo was faced with doing qualifying on a slippery circuit. Anyway he managed a good P7 in his group and overall he finished in P20. This meant starting all the five heats on the fourth row.
Gaining experience all the time Lorenzo used his head in the correct way in the races managing to finish each time in P6, P5, P13, P12 and P14. Things looked positive and he qualified for the Final in P20.
Ready to go for his first final in a European Championship, Lorenzo started very aggressively and immediately he was in a good P15 fighting in the middle of the group. Having saved the last set of new tires to start the final, he showed very quick speed but defending his position at the end of the straight he got a push from the Spanish driver Briz and unfortunately ended up in the barriers. That was a sad moment because he could have had a good final result, maybe into the points.
The Genk race gave Lorenzo the opportunity to increase his experience and self esteem, and in two weeks time he will be in Kristianstad, Sweden for the third round of the European Championship with good moral.
