FIA Karting European Championship Round 3
31 May - 2 June 2019
The Asum Ring near Kristianstad in Sweden was the venue for the third round of the FIA Karting European Championship this weekend. Lorenzo was looking to build on the experience and confidence he gained after reaching his first final last time out in Belgium, but unfortunately it was not to be.
Friday’s free practice went reasonably well but then, moving to the qualifying heats on Saturday, an issue with the tyres affected many drivers. Lorenzo lost almost half a second compared with his pace on Friday making qualifying a real challenge.
During Sunday morning warm up Lorenzo was 0.5s quicker than his best lap time during Saturday, and in the qualifying heat he made up eight places from his starting position to finish 11th. This was a good performance, but not enough to join the 34 drivers in the final.
The championship moves to Le Mans in France next time out. This is a circuit familiar to Lorenzo who raced there in October, but he will be racing a new kart because he is making the step up to the OK category. A new challenge!
