WSK Super Masters Series Round 2
21-24 February 2019
Lorenzo joined more than one hundred other OK Junior drivers from around the world for the second round of the WSK Super Master Series at Circuito South Garda Karting this weekend. Last time out, although the end result did not reflect it, he had a strong weekend and back at Lonato again Lorenzo was looking to build on the strong progress he is showing.
Right from the start of the weekend Lorenzo was on the pace. He set the second fastest time of all in qualifying practice, just 0.013s behind Dutch driver Thomas Ten Brinke, but his ideal lap time (made up of his best sector times in the session) would have put him the fastest.
Lorenzo was on the front row of the grid for the first 13 lap elimination heat. Probably, looking behind for the first time in his career with 32 karts ready to catch the start and fight, he was rather cautious and finished 10th at the chequered flag.
In the next heat he started from pole position and ended the race in a disappointed 14th position because of tactical mistakes. Would it be third time lucky?
Yes! On Saturday he was definitely on the pace and finished the heats twice in 5th place and the final one in a good 3rd position. Unfortunately a penalty of 10 seconds dropped him 16 positions in one heat and that made him start prefinal A on the 6th row.
He spent the race battling with KR Motorsport team-mate Matthew Rees, and after 17laps just 0.06s separated them with Lorenzo finishing 10th.
Now it was time for the final, and Lorenzo started from the tenth row with Rees ahead and Trulli behind, but before the end of the first lap he was out of the race because a kart hit him from behind.
Despite this, once again, Lorenzo had shown his speed, commitment and determination. Although the end result did not show it, he had exceeded expectations and could look forward to the next WSK Super Masters Series round which will be in a couple of weeks time in La Conca.
